The global container shipping market has heated up recently, with freight rates climbing for four consecutive weeks. On May 22, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) rose by 3.62% week-on-week, marking a nearly 20% cumulative increase since late April. Freight rates on major routes to Europe, America and the Mediterranean have all gone up.
The price surge is mainly caused by Middle East geopolitical risks disrupting shipping and worsening port congestion. Rising oil prices further push up transportation costs. European and American merchants stock up in advance for peak seasons, resulting in full vessel capacity and shortages of ships and containers.
Many shipping companies plan to sharply raise freight rates on European and American routes in June. Industry insiders predict an early peak shipping season, with the market staying strong in the second and third quarters. Tight capacity will not ease anytime soon.
Freight rates climb across all routes: Far East-Europe: $1,905 per TEU, up 4.90% Far East-Mediterranean: $3,207 per TEU, up 1.97% Far East-US West Coast: $3,154 per FEU, up 1.15% Far East-US East Coast: $4,313 per FEU, up 2.11% Persian Gulf route: $4,306 per TEU, up 4.24% South America (Santos): $5,105 per TEU, up 19.95% Australia & New Zealand route: $1,398 per TEU, up 2.63% For Intra-Asia / Short-sea routes: Far East-Singapore: $585 per container, a weekly rise of $15 per TEU Far East-Japan Kansai: up $7 per TEU week-on-week Far East-Japan Kanto: up $15 per TEU week-on-week Far East-South Korea: up $7 per TEU week-on-week
