On the evening of April 9, 2026 (local time), a severe fuel oil spill occurred during bunkering operations of a vessel at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Europe’s largest port. The port authority has classified the incident as a “crisis”.
To conduct oil spill cleanup operations, Deurganckdok, the port’s largest container terminal, has fully suspended operations starting at 19:30 on April 10 (local time) until further notice. The cleanup covers Deurganckdok, Noorderzee, Europa terminals, and the Berendrecht-Zandvliet lock area.
Following the incident, the main shipping channel of the Scheldt River and some locks have gradually reopened to navigation, but the core container terminal remains closed. A total of 54 container ships are currently stranded, including 29 outbound vessels and 25 inbound vessels. If the suspension continues, the number of stranded ships will rise further, dealing a major blow to port operations.
