At 19:45 on October 25th, a serious ship collision accident occurred near Mayou Stone in the Pearl River Estuary. The involved vessels were the container ship "Xi Chun" of Wan Hai Shipping and the bulk carrier "Hai Li 5" of Nanjing Haili Shipping.
At the time of the incident, "Hai Li 5" suddenly lost power and lost control while on the Guangzhou-Shanghai voyage, colliding violently with the inbound "Xi Chun". "Hai Li 5" broke apart immediately and sank rapidly, with all 15 crew members on board falling into the water. The accident site was located on the east side of the Lingding Channel in the Pearl River Estuary, where the navigation environment is complex and the tidal current is irregular, increasing the risk of navigation.
After the accident, relevant departments promptly initiated emergency response. The Guangzhou Vessel Traffic Service Center imposed temporary traffic control on the accident waters, and the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center coordinated various forces to conduct an emergency search. As of 16:54 on October 26th, 13 of the 15 crew members who fell into the water had been rescued, with 2 still missing. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.
The Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration promptly issued a navigation warning, reminding passing vessels that there is a sunken ship within 1 nautical mile upstream and downstream of the Mayou Stone light vessel, and to maintain a safe distance. This accident serves as a wake-up call for shipping safety. Relevant departments should further strengthen navigation safety management, improve navigation facilities, and enhance emergency response capabilities.
