Currently, container rates have fallen to their lowest level since 2024, with the WCI Composite rate Index down 4% compared to the previous week, with trans-Pacific rates down 4%, Asia-Europe/Mediterranean rates down 5%, and trans-Atlantic rates down 7%, mainly due to weaker demand and a shift in strategy by the carrier alliance.
In the face of the continued trend of lower freight rates, the global shipping giant MSC issued a notice announcing the cancellation of six trans-Pacific routes.
Despite the challenges, carriers tried to increase the Consolidated Rate Increase Surcharge (GRI) in April. However, overcapacity remains a pressing problem and rates are likely to remain under downward pressure.
