The US has introduced a new bill that would require 10% of Chinese exports to the US to be transported by US-flagged vessels.
On December 19, US MP introduced a bill called the SHIPS for America Act, which requires that some goods imported from China must be shipped on US-flag vessels starting from 2029.
In more detail, the bill stipulates that within 15 years after its enactment, the proportion of US-flag vessels used for transporting goods exported from China to the US will gradually increase and reach 10%. The US-flag vessels referred to in the bill are those manufactured in the US, registered in the US, and with crew members being US citizens. Currently, the bill has received support from several maritime-related organizations, including the Shipbuilders Council of America, American Shipbuilding Suppliers Association, and American Association of Port Authorities.
