How tough is the market? With 315 idle ships and 1.18 million TEU of idle capacity, the market value of shipping companies fell by $135 billion
According to the latest report of Alphaliner, since entering the fourth quarter, the number of idle container ships in the world has soared again, and there are currently 315 container ships in the world with a total of 1.18 million Teu in idle state!
Alphaliner conducted a survey of idled container ships every two weeks, and the results showed that 271 container ships were idled two weeks ago, with a total of 942,035 TEU, and 44 more container ships were idled in the market in just two weeks.
To date, most of the growth in the idled container ship fleet has come from small and medium-sized vessels, but an increasing number of shipping lines are deciding to mothball excess large vessels as they are replaced by new, larger vessels.
In addition, to mitigate the prospect of weak demand, shipping companies stepped up their outage plans, including the introduction of winter service plans, which led to a reduction in the actual service network and an oversupply of tonnage.
