Panama Canal Authority warns restrictions will stay in place for at least 10 months
According to One-shipping learned:Panama Canal Authority officials have warned that the Panama Canal will maintain daily restrictions on the number of vessels passing through and the maximum draft for at least the next 10 months due to a prolonged drought that has reduced water levels.
The total number of ships stranded on August 25 was 129, down from a peak of 165 earlier this month but still 43 per cent above the average, according to official data.
For container ships, the largest vessels will likely continue to be subject to draft restrictions, meaning that about 2,500 TEU of space is not available, so the maximum head range utilization is 84%; For ships above 12,000 TEU, rerouted to the Suez Canal is one of the options many liner companies are now considering, given that Panamanian officials say the restrictions will remain in place.
